Thanks for the education, Arun. Though I must say that it is very disappointing. I have so much admiration for Hindus as having a belief system that is totally compatible with modern science and democracy, unlike any other religion that I know of. But when I see incidents like these, it is really depressing, especially when I see educated Hindus trying to rationalize the indefensible. Makes me wonder how much they really believe in what they claim to believe in.
I mean, doesn't this incident play right into the hands of the Witzel types who have been demanding that discrimination against so-called "lower caste" Hindus be emphasized in the text books? If I were a Hindu, and not of the "high caste", I would really want to be informed if I am going to be humilated, or even attacked, for the simple act of entering a temple to worship. And that in 2007? By the Vedic Foundation's calculation, that would be the Year 1,752,007... Time enough for the "rules" to be cleaned up, don't you think?
As for Parsis, Muslims, Jews etc., I really don't think these should be rationalizations. The issue here is very simple - a BELIEVER, BORN HINDU, is insulted, for bringing his family and little son to pray to the Deity. In a sacred HINDU temple.
Are you saying that Mr. Ravi and his family should, say, "go elsewhere" to pray? Stand outside the temple? WHY? Would you find that an acceptable solution for your family, if, say, the California temples decided that they would only admit WHITE Hindus, and you weren't White enough? Would standing outside "turn the Deity around"?
That story about the Deity turning, was beautiful, by the way, and confirms my basic belief that Indian people, especially Hindus, have a highly developed sense of fair play, and of the right winning in the end, and that the Almighty stands on the side of those suffering injustice, and on occasion, gives an awesome demonstration thereof.
I have to disagree with you on something else. I don't think Mr. Ravi would be a lesser man if he stood up for his rights, and I am really disappointed to hear you saying that he should NOT sue. It's not about money - it's about justice and civil rights. Would you say, by the same token, that the CAPEEM parents would be bigger people if they did not sue the Witzel crowd? Isn't the logic the same?
So I DO hope Mr. Ravi sues - and that the courts crack down on these evil practices and punishes those who ignore the rights of fellow Hindus. In my book, suing is far better than, say, throwing stones or resorting to such frustration.
This is the SECOND time that these temple bureaucrats have deliberately humilated this innocent, devoted family. The first time Mr. Ravi did NOT sue.
Now he does need to sue, for the sake of the hundreds of thousands of people like him, who are being denied the right to worship. That IS a fundamental right. What do you think that right is about? That you can worship in your MIND, and not enter places of worship? Really? Even Russians and Chinese have always had that right, so are you saying that the Constitution of India is a fraud? Or that you don't believe in it? This makes no sense, and I see that you don't agree with what happened at the temple either.
I did read that interview by P. Panicker of Rediff, with the High Priest. It was very disappointing to see the arrogance of the man. He seems to have no clue that other people have their rights. Sorry, but people like these have to be got out of positions where they have authority to make Hinduism look so bad.
There are many times when I have considered it a privilege to stand up for Hindus. Here too - but the Hindus I have in mind are those who really believe in their religion - not these pompous asses who are polluting that temple with their bigotry, and not those who try to rationalize and cover up for them.
I may be ignorant about the civil rights movement in India, but I have seen enough "rationalizations" from racists bigots here (and still do every day) to have any doubt on this issue. Mr. Ravi MUST make a stand, for the good of Hinduism. The rest of us must do our best to cleanse the temples - do real "punyahams" by washing away the real filth there - the bigot priests and administrators.
Thanks for your comments, though. I'll leave it to the BLOG owner to post the new developments, like the interviews.
The hilarious thing is that the losers are jumping up and down, desperately trying to attract attention their "Liars' Report". Ra(*) Ravishankar, their "spokesLyR" has come out with an even more laughable "Press Release", literally wailing that no one is paying any attention to them, SIX WEEKS after their grand release. Apparently Ra(*) is too IQ-challenged to see why it is not exactly great advertising for the authors of a report to call their own report a Liars' Report - must be to help out the 6 people who can't figure that out after reading the first 3 pages of it.
I think I'll add this to my Blog post
Dear Raghunathan: You are so soft-spoken, bless you!
This "something improper" that the Church did in the past, requires more publicity and understanding.
Hitler (no comment on Ratzinger's associations there..) and his goons are supposed to have killed 6 million people.
Compare that to what the Christian Church in its various mutations and branches, has done:
1. In South America
2. In North America
3. In the Hawaiian and South Pacific Islands
4. In Africa
5. In China
6. In the Middle East (Crusades)
7. In Europe and Russia (Crusades, pogroms, mass imposed famines)
8. In Asia, such as Phillippines, Thailand.
9. In India, starting with Goa.
Hitler, Stalin, Pol Pot etc were gross amateurs and non-entities compared to the Popes. In fact, they have made quite sure that the entire Kingdom of Heaven is well-populated with the innocents whom they have sent there.
madds:
The issue that comes to the front here is the gross ignorance of real Hinduism by these "temple authorities" and all the bigots behind them. These fools are still stuck in the evil habits of mistreating fellow-citizens on some basis of "birth". This is flat-out against the Constitution of India.
What someone believes is their choice. My understanding of the Bhagavad Gita is that the Almighty welcomes those who BELIEVE in the Almighty and HAVE FAITH. NOT based on who their daddy was, etc.
The evil Hiranyaksha was probably the first Mullah of the Lashkar-e-Toiba. Still, his son was welcomed and protected by the Almighty in the Narasimha Avatara. Because he was a BELIEVER who had FAITH. The "modern" Temple Authorities who are supposedly safeguarding those traditions, would instead refuse admission to the temple to the most devout, and do "Punyaham" if they enter. This is a disgrace.
Oops! Correction. If Hiranyaksha was a Kerala Chief Minister or someone equally corrupt, they would probably have kissed his backside and welcomed him. K. Karunakaran was not a whole lot better than this, after all...
Discrimination according to birth is illegal, and violates basic fundamental rights of the Indian citizen. I hope Mr. Ravi does sue these fellows. In the 1930s or 40s, Mahatma Gandhi came to Kerala and forced several temples to open their doors to ordinary Hindus, who were until then denied entry for worship. I believe it was Swami Vivekananda (?) who called Kerala a madhouse, with all its micro-prejudices and artificial barriers to human progress.
And this in the land where Adi Sankara was born and raised!

Mr. Rajagopal should be congratulated on his deep sense of guilt stemming from his role as a Trusty of the modern Simon Legree types in California and Massachussetts. This whole BLOG permeates Mr. Rajagopal's defensiveness, which is entirely understandable given the sort of implications that Arun_S alludes to.
It is true I know, that FOSA's lawyer, who seems to have inherited Raju's terrific looks and FOSA's famed competence, suffered a humiliating disaster in FOSA's debut on the court's side of a legal process, a side to which they are doubtless unaccustomed. See "Underground Processes, Hostile Academics" http://www.indiacause.com/columns/OL_060913.htm (where I described as gently as I could, how they got summarily kicked out of court, followed by their "briefs" marked "amikuss cyooriae"). Next time perhaps they could get someone else to spell-check their documents, instead of the author of the "Allah Will Destory Terrist India and Amerka" postor.
So, to Mr. Rajagopal's brilliant mind, it appears that the State of California's dictating ethics rules to its senior Education Board members, is a "victory" for FOSA and a "defeat" for HAF? Terrific logic, I agree. Look what the State did NOT order these Senior Board Members NOT to do:
"You shall not pee on the Board's desks and chairs any more!"
"No spitting in corridors any more!"
"You will not leave the toilet without flushing it again - in fact it would be better if you stay inside and flush yourself!"
"You will not steal California taxpayer funds and divert them to pay underperforming employees of the Harvard Corporation!"
(no wonder they haven't said this yet - Harvard Corporation Supervisor Alan Bersin is still the Secretary of Education in California, isn't he?)
The list is long. Congratulations to Mr. Rajagopal and FOSA, especially to their brilliant lawyer on their achievements. Given the events in Nandigram, I was beginning to get worried for Mr. Rajagopal. I mean, those mobs of kulaks and Running Dogs of Reactionaries where getting pretty restive, weren't they? Much safer, I agree, for leaders of the Communist Revolution to be sitting in California rather than Kolkotta.
Losers' Whining gets shrilller
Arun:
Note that Mr. Ra() Ravishankar calls HIS OWN (and his FOIL/YSS co-authors') report the "Liar's Report", though he clearly has trouble spelling. And in that, I have to agree that he is telling the truth. Very confusing, which is why I called it a Freudian Landslide.
Perhaps he is proud of being proven a "Lyr" in the case of the Daily Illini complaints. Or perhaps he is proud of his Brand-Name recognition, as in "Ra Ravishankar - The Proven LyR"
Can't say. Note that this is a person who posts articles proudly declaring how he keeps his girlfriend (and even giving her name) as a live-in sex vehicle, rather than marry her, citing his abhorrence of marriage and other social customs as the excuse. I'd say that takes the 2007 Prize for dorkiness, wouldn't you? I don't know that I would describe a FOIL girlfriend a "lady", but come on, at least she's a woman (I hope..) ?? SOME consideration for her self-esteem might have been expected, but perhaps not from someone like Ra() Ravishankar?
